Newport Volunteer Rescue Squad helped the community on Sunday June 6 with the Mountains of Misery bike race. The road race started at the Newport Community center and went into Craig County and back to Mountain Lake for the finish. Newport Rescue recieved help from Blacksburg Rescue Squad, who brough ALS unit 53, Craig County, and Giles Rescue and Lifesaving Crew. Newport Rescue and Blacksburg Rescue both transported patients and helped multiple cyclist with medical issues.
